Choose the Right Fuel: Healthy Choices on the Road
Healthy food and road trips are not usually two phrases that go together. However, eating healthy on the road, isn’t as complicated as you might think! But, it does take some planning and forethought before you take of on your adventure. If you make the commitment, and have the right tools to make it happen, you’ll not only enjoy your trip but your body will too!
There are two ways you can set out on this healthy journey: packing healthy foods and eating while in your car or RV, or stopping off to dine in at restaurants. It all depends on how much time you have to spend, and money too!
If you’re goal is to get to from point A to point B in the shortest time possible, here are some healthy snack options that travel well. It would be best to keep cheese, fruits and vegetables in a small cooler.
* Homemade trail mix (figs, prunes, raisins, dried apricots, almonds, dried apples) Eat this snack in small quantities because it is calorie packed. Even though it is a rich source of fiber, vitamins and minerals, you can get too much of a good thing!
* Pre-washed fruit (apples, pears, mangos, grapes)
* Baby Carrots
* Pita bread and hummus
* String Cheese
* Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches
* Flavored waters to avoid dehydration
* Low sugar yogurts, smoothies
* Granola Bars or other favorite meal replacement bar
* 100 calorie snack packs
For those individuals on a longer journey, you want to take a break and give your body a stretch. Here are some healthy guidelines to remember when dining out on the road.
* Choose grilled lean meats over fried foods (avoid chicken nuggets, chicken fingers, French fries, onion rings, tortilla bowls)
* Ask for whole wheat instead of white bread/rolls
* Many restaurants now have fresh fruits/yogurts/salads as side dishes in place of French fries
* Use low-fat and olive oil based dressings
* If you are craving a burger, try a kid’s size or single hamburger (no cheese, no mayo)
* Opt for low-fat deli sandwiches (turkey, ham, roast beef)
* Wraps can be healthy, add your own low-fat dressing
* Drink water, low-fat milk or diet drinks instead of soda
* If you order dessert, split with a friend!
Most importantly, have a good time, and be safe! Don’t deprive yourself of a food you really desire, just have it in small quantities. It is best to be flexible on your excursion, and try to make the best choices available to you
