Silver City, New Mexico

On a recent trip to New Mexico we stopped for a few days in a town called Silver City, NM. In 1870, a group of American prospectors discovered silver in the hills and the silver rush was on. In ten months, the new town of Silver City grew from a single cabin to over eighty buildings.

Located in the southwest corner of the state Silver City’s “back yard” contains 3.3 million acres of national forest and is our nation’s first congressionally designated wilderness area’s. It is the sixth largest national forest. Hiking, biking, fishing and trail riding are all easily accessible. If fishing is your thing check out Lake Roberts where you can boat, fish and camp.

A short distance from Lake Roberts is where you will find the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument and visitor center. The Gila Cliff Dwellings monument is a 44-mile drive north from Silver City on N Mex 15. The drive time is about 2 hours. Stop at the visitors center to get some information, see exhibits and to checkout the bookstore.

You can pack a lunch and enjoy nature at the picnic areas or camp at the campground. This is truly one of the most beautiful spots in New Mexico. The topography, the clear blue skies and star filled skies at night makes this a favorite in our travel journal. Check out Silver City and let us know what you think.

If you have never been to New Mexico put it on your list for a future trip. Wide open spaces, clear blue skies, incredible star gazing and friendly folks has made this state one of our all time favorites!
