Hubbard Museum - New Mexico

For many people, the town of Ruidoso, NM is unknown. For me, it is a town that I have had a love affair with since my first visit in 1994. Located in the rugged Sierra Blanca mountain range of south central New Mexico, where it merges with the Sacramento Mountains to the south, Ruidoso is a town unlike what most believe the west would look like. At an elevation of 6,800 feet the views and vistas of mountains, pines and aspens along with many cultural and western events makes it a fun and beautiful place to visit as well as live.

On a recent trip we visited the Hubbard Museum of the American West. The Hubbard Museum is owned and operated by the city of Ruidoso Downs. This museum was a great surprise to us. It has a vast and interesting display of all of the old west memorabilia.

The mission of the Hubbard Museum of the American West is to collect, preserve and interpret the political, social, business, cultural, and environmental history of the American West from the period of human habitation to the present day, with special emphasis on the local and regional arts, history and culture. The Hubbard Museum will be a collaborate institution that provides exemplary public service for our patrons. Hubbard Museum programming, exhibits, and special events will seek to empower audiences to engage in a dialogue about the legacy of the American West and its continuing impact on American society.

R.D. and Joan Dale Hubbard founded the Hubbard Museum of the American West in 1992, then presented it to the City of Ruidoso Downs in 2005. It has grown from its original incredible collection of Anne C. Stradling’s Museum of the Horse to being a truly first class historic Western museum. The famous Stradling collection includes bits, spurs, bridles and saddles from around the world, and an amazing collection of carriages, wagons and horse drawn vehicles spanning hundreds of years.
